Treasures For The World

Home to one of the world's premier encyclopedic collections, the Detroit Institute of Arts is located in the heart of the City's Cultural Center. The DIA's enormous collection includes masterworks of van Gogh, Picasso, Rodin, Rembrandt, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, and hundreds more of the greatest artists of all time.

The mission of the DIA is to create "experiences that help each visitor find personal meaning in art." The galleries group and present works in a novel way, featuring interactive exhibits and informational displays to create a most memorable experience for the visitor.

The image above is a detail from "Detroit Industry" by Diego Rivera. Featured in the DIA's center court, the muralist considered the stunning fresco to be his most successful installation. The work was commissioned by auto magnate Edsel Ford and then-DIA director William Valentiner in 1933.

The DIA itself is a wonderful example of modern architecture. The collection is housed in a magnificent Beaux Arts building designed by Paul Cret in 1927. A $230 million renovation program designed to better protect and present the works was completed this year. The DIA currently is hosting a contemporary blockbuster video installation, "Action <> Reaction."
